Zakat is calculated once a lunar year on the wealth you have held for that full year. The arithmetic is straightforward; most of the questions we receive are about which assets to include and where the threshold sits this year.
Establishing Your Nisab
Nisab is the minimum level of wealth at which zakat becomes due, measured against the value of gold or silver. Because the two metals move independently, the figure changes through the year and the silver standard is generally the lower of the two. Check the current value on your zakat anniversary rather than relying on last year's number.
What Counts Toward the Calculation
Cash held at home and in accounts, gold and silver, shares held for trading, money owed to you that you expect to recover, and the resale value of business stock are all included. Immediate liabilities such as outstanding bills and overdue payments are deducted. Your home, personal vehicle, and ordinary household possessions are not counted.
If your net zakatable wealth sits above the Nisab, 2.5% is due. Our office can direct payments to local disbursement routes, including hardship support for families already registered with our outreach team. If your situation involves business assets or long-term debt, speak to us before calculating.
