Understanding the Eternal Virtues of Sadaqah Jariyah

Hassan Al-SaeedDirector of Community Outreach

5 min read

Sadaqah jariyah is continuing charity: a gift whose benefit keeps flowing after the act of giving is complete, and after the giver has passed on. It is the difference between feeding someone today and establishing the means by which they are fed for years.

What Makes a Charity Continuing

The distinguishing feature is durability of benefit. A well serves a village for decades. A school keeps teaching after its founders are gone. Planted trees shade and feed people who never knew who planted them. Each of these keeps producing value without further intervention from the donor.

Where This Fits in Our Work

Much of what One Ummah builds falls into this category by design: mosque construction, the Islamic school, and the long-term support programs that outlast any single campaign. Donors who want their giving to compound in this way can direct contributions to the building fund rather than to immediate relief, though both remain necessary.

The scale of the gift matters less than its permanence. A modest contribution toward something enduring carries further than a larger one that is consumed at once.
